Google Puts More Links in AI Answers

What the 15 October Update Means for UK Small Businesses

One of the biggest complaints about AI search is that it answers the question and keeps the reader on Google. On 15 October 2026 Google announced a set of changes to AI Overviews and AI Mode that are aimed squarely at that complaint. Here is what is changing, what is still only a test, and what a small business should do about it.

1. More links, placed higher up

Google says it has increased the number of inline links inside AI responses, and that they will appear “higher up in responses more frequently”. Links at the end of responses are also being redesigned to be more prominent. Google’s stated aim is that “key sources are easily clickable”.

What it means: If your pages are being used as sources, there is a better chance than before that a reader actually sees and clicks your link. Being a source is becoming more valuable, not less.

2. A test: “official” sources at the top

Google is testing a section at the top of some AI answers for sites that are “the one or two official places on the web” for a task or piece of information, with a short explanation of why each link is useful. It is a test, so it will not appear for everyone.

What it means: For queries such as “book an MOT in Leeds” or “renew a business licence”, the official provider could be pushed to the top. Make sure your own website, Google Business Profile and booking pages are the clearest, most authoritative answer for your business name and services.

3. News carousels and “Preferred Sources” expand

Carousels of timely articles, and the Preferred Sources feature that lets people choose the outlets they want to see, are expanding to more locations and languages worldwide. Google’s Nick Fox said the number of people using the customisation has grown 7x since the start of the year, and that more than 400 publications are in Google’s News AI licensing pilot. Reports on the announcement do not say which countries or when, so do not assume UK timing.

What it means: This mainly matters if you publish news or regular commentary. Consistent, original publishing builds the kind of recognition that makes people choose you as a source.

4. Creator profile links in video results (test)

In a test in AI Mode, creator and publisher names on video results can be clicked to open a Google Search profile page. Note this goes to a page hosted by Google, not directly to your own website.

What it means: If you publish video (how-tos, project walkthroughs), keep your channel and brand name consistent so a profile is easy to associate with you.

The catch: you still cannot see the clicks

Google’s Search Console reports for generative AI features, launched in June 2026, show impressions but not clicks. According to BetaNews, Google said it is still consulting site owners about what to add and expects more metrics later, without giving a date. So even if more people click through from AI answers, you cannot yet measure it directly in Google’s tools. Cross-check with your own analytics, call tracking and the “how did you hear about us” question.

The takeaway

This update is a small but welcome shift: Google is acknowledging that sources need to be visible and clickable. It reinforces the message from Google’s September guidance that AI search runs on the same foundations as normal SEO: crawlable, helpful, trustworthy pages. For a small business that means keeping your website, service pages and local listings accurate and clear, and measuring enquiries, not just clicks.
